Checkmate wins Emirates Air Line cable car contract
Checkmate wins a 2 year contract to provide working at height support services for the Emirates Air Line Cable Car with Macro. Macro is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mace who currently operates the service.
The Emirates Air Line is the UK’s first urban cable car and is a key transport link across the River Thames in London. The system was built by Mace and Cableway manufacturer, Doppelmayr. The Cable Car is owned by Transport for London with Emirates as the sponsor.
The service opened on 28 June 2012 and has seen over 5 million passengers since operation began. In addition to transport across the river, the service advertises spectacular views of the city from heights of 90 metres as you travel between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks. The duration of a single crossing is ten minutes reduced to five minutes in rush hour as the service speed is increased.
Checkmate and its dedicated Height And Rescue Training division, HART will provide a team of up to 30 rope access rescue technicians for all working at height support services at The Cable Car.
General Manager for Macro, Stacey Smith said, “This is first time the contract had been tendered for since the initial start up and we were impressed with Checkmate’s dynamic and professional approach. The scope of works is very demanding and requires close communication with Transport for London. We have every confidence in Checkmate being able to provide Macro and ultimately the passengers of the Emirates Air Line complete safety and peace of mind”.
Managing Director, Oliver Auston commented, “We are delighted to be chosen for such a prestigious contract on a fabulous London landmark and to be working with a professional partner in Macro. Not only will we be providing working at height support we will also be manufacturing in the UK the specialist rescue equipment required. Our Managed Services Team worked tirelessly to present our companies capabilities and innovative solutions.”
The triple Queen’s Award Winning Checkmate is a privately owned family business founded in 1979 and has become one of the UK’s leading height safety and lifting gear companies, employing over 100 people across two sites in Kent and Wiltshire.
